Background of the study
Religious attitudes significantly influence social perceptions and human rights issues, particularly regarding LGBTQ+ individuals. In Uhunmwonde, prevailing religious doctrines shape community attitudes, often resulting in a complex interplay of acceptance, rejection, and calls for reform. Conservative interpretations of religious texts frequently contribute to stigma and discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals, while some progressive religious groups advocate for inclusivity and compassion (Adebayo, 2023). The debate is intensified by modern reinterpretations of sacred texts and evolving societal norms that challenge traditional views (Nwachukwu, 2024). Recent research indicates that these religious attitudes are a major factor in the social marginalization of LGBTQ+ individuals (Daramola, 2025). This investigation aims to provide a nuanced understanding of how religious beliefs influence perceptions of LGBTQ+ rights and the resulting social implications in Uhunmwonde.
Statement of the problem
Despite global advances in LGBTQ+ rights, religious-based discrimination remains a significant challenge in Uhunmwonde. Prevailing religious doctrines often foster negative attitudes toward LGBTQ+ individuals, leading to social exclusion and limited access to opportunities. The entrenched stigma, rooted in conservative religious interpretations, poses substantial barriers to social equity and human rights. The lack of comprehensive research on the impact of religious attitudes exacerbates these challenges, limiting the development of effective intervention strategies. This study addresses this gap by examining the extent to which religious beliefs contribute to the marginalization of LGBTQ+ individuals in the community.
